OpenAI, on 31st July 2026, piloted a new ChatGPT ad format that skips the landing page entirely. Click the ad, and instead of a webpage, you get a live conversation with a business-specific AI agent. It can answer questions, show products, and collect lead information right away.
This sits inside OpenAI's broader Ads Manager rollout, which went self-serve on July 22, 2026. The agent-conversation format is not public yet. It is running with a limited set of advertisers inside Ads Manager, and the underlying tech reportedly borrows from Custom GPTs.
What's Happening
Digital advertising has run on one pattern for 25 years; an ad gets a click, and the click opens a website. OpenAI's pilot breaks that pattern. The conversation serves as the landing page.
Three components make up the workflow:
Business profiling: ChatGPT crawls the advertiser's website and auto-generates a business profile. That profile pulls in common customer questions, support details, and general company context, no manual setup required.
Agent configuration: Advertisers layer custom instructions on top of that profile. They can plug in product feeds, connect Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools for live inventory or pricing data, and attach lead-capture forms directly to the agent.
Campaign delivery: Instead of routing clicks to a URL, the campaign routes them straight into a chat with the configured agent.
The Bigger Ad Shift Behind It
OpenAI opened self-serve advertising in the U.S. on May 5, 2026, letting any business set budgets and target ChatGPT users by conversational context instead of keywords.
Ads currently show only to Free and Go tier users; Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers see none.
Beyond the U.S., OpenAI has added Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Brazil, the U.K., Japan, South Korea, and Mexico.
Cited by CNBC, estimated OpenAI ad revenue stays under $1 billion in 2026 but could cross $30 billion by 2030.
OpenAI states that ads never influence ChatGPT's actual answers and that conversations stay private from advertisers.
The current standard ad unit is a labeled "Sponsored" link or card placed below a response. The agent-conversation format would be layered on top of that as a second, much deeper ad surface.

What It Means for Marketers
A sponsored link competes for a click. A sponsored agent competes for the entire buying conversation. If this format ships broadly, a user could go from ad click to product recommendation to lead form without ever loading a company website.
This approach collapses several funnel stages that most B2B and B2C teams still treat as separate: initial interest, product Q&A, objection handling, and lead capture.
An agent built from a scraped website is only as useful as the content on that site. Thin service pages, missing FAQs, and outdated product data will show up directly inside the sales conversation.
MCP support is worth flagging on its own. It means agents can pull live business data instead of static, crawled content.
Pricing, stock levels, and appointment availability could stay current inside the ad experience itself, not just on the website.
What's Still Unclear
The end-user experience has not been observed publicly. Search Engine Land reports that the feature exists today inside ChatGPT Ads Manager for a limited advertiser group, with no confirmation yet on how prominently these ads will surface or how they will be visually distinguished from organic ChatGPT responses.
Conclusion
OpenAI spent two years calling advertising a last resort. Self-serve Ads Manager, expanding pilot markets, and now agent-launching ad units suggest that resort has become a core business line.
For marketing teams, the practical move right now is auditing whether your website content could support an AI agent representing your business inside someone else's chat window. That audit matters regardless of when, or if, this specific format goes wide.
